Making Words Plural

Want to talk about more than one thing? Here's the easy way to turn one word into many!

In English, we usually just add -s to make a word plural (cat → cats). Spanish has two simple endings depending on how the word ends!

The Easy Rule

+ s
If the word ends in a vowel (a, e, i, o, u), just add -s
gato gatos
casa casas
libro libros
+ es
If the word ends in a consonant, add -es
papel papeles
flor flores
color colores

El and La Change Too

When a word becomes plural, el and la change too!
el → los la → las

A Sneaky Word

🕵️ Words ending in -z change the z to c before adding -es!
tricky! lápiz → lápices (not "lápizes")
tricky! luz → luces (not "luzes")
