Yo Soy... / Yo Tengo...

Two magic phrases that help you talk all about yourself in Spanish!

Yo soy means "I am." Yo tengo means "I have." They sound simple — but Spanish uses them in a surprising way. Let's find out!

The Easy Rule

Yo soy...
Use for your name, what you're like, and where you're from
Yo soy Ana.I am Ana.
Yo soy alto.I am tall.
Yo soy de Texas.I am from Texas.
Yo tengo...
Use for things you have, your age, and your family
Yo tengo un perro.I have a dog.
Yo tengo ocho años.I am eight years old.
Yo tengo dos hermanas.I have two sisters.

A Sneaky One!

🕵️ Your age uses "tengo," not "soy"!
In English we say "I AM ten years old." But in Spanish, you say "I HAVE ten years"!
✗ Yo soy diez años. ✓ Yo tengo diez años.
